Re: xdvik-1.8f for native PostScript fonts
Dt: 950223
The Question:
I run SCO ODT3.0 (please: no jokes).
I have compiled (gcc2.6.3) and installed very recent versions of tex3.1415(web2c-6.1)
dvipsk5.58f, and your xdvik-1.8f which comes with kpathsea2.6.
Also have ghostview1.5 over gs3.12.
Just about everything works...except xdvi won't display e.g. ptmr native PS fonts:
either I get nothing displayed, or I get cm10 (fall back font) substituted.
Yes, xdvi works perfectly on all bitmapped fonts (just put in tengwar!).
I would be very grateful for pointer that might fix this: I believe it is
simply a configuration problem, but in xdvi-1.8f I found (1) outdated INSTALL
files (they *say* to disregard the contained configuration material), and (2) no
texi doc (such as accompanied kpathsea, dvips, and (wow!) gcc). (The man page was
just that, i.e. had no install section.)
Details:
My test.tex has a magstep1 cmbx font (so I am guaranteed somtehing viewable), and
then defines "\font\PTR=ptmr at 11 pt \PTR" to switch to Times-Roman.
Running xdvi -d 32 shows ...
kdebug: fopen ...fonts/adobe/times/vf/ptmr.vf, r) => 0x417d60
kdebug: fclose(0x417d60) => 0
kdebug: fopen ...fonts/public/cm/pk/jetiiisi/cmbx10.360pk, r) => 0x417d60
kdebug: fopen ...fonts/texfonts.map, r) => 0x417d70
kdebug: fclose(0x417d70) => 0
kpathsea: Running MakeTeXPK rptmr 396 300 1+96/300
...MakeTeXPK: Running gsftopk rptmr 396
gsftopk version 1.8 .... ..successful
kdebug: fopen ...gsftopk/rptmr.396pk, r) => 0x417d70.
THEREFORE it is (1) finding the .vf, then (2) using the psfonts.map to locate
the raw rptmr to gen a rptmr*pk (why?), and (3) not succeeding in displaying it.
I tried defining "\font\PTR=rptmr at 11pt" with identical (zippo) results.
I tried -d 4 ... hard to say, but it appears to read .vf correctly. Just stops.
Bottom line:
I saw no doc to pick up: if there is one I would happily RTFM.
Installing tengwar ... I believe I comprehend ... much ... correctly.
Not arrogant, really. Thank you for any pointers.
