  20. I run SCO ODT3.0 (please: no jokes).
  21. I have compiled (gcc2.6.3) and installed very recent versions of tex3.1415(web2c-6.1)
  22. dvipsk5.58f, and your xdvik-1.8f which comes with kpathsea2.6.  
  23. Also have ghostview1.5 over gs3.12.
  24. Just about everything works...except xdvi won't display e.g. ptmr native PS fonts:
  25. either I get nothing displayed, or I get cm10 (fall back font) substituted.
  26. Yes, xdvi works perfectly on all bitmapped fonts (just put in tengwar!).
  27. I would be very grateful for pointer that might fix this: I believe it is
  28. simply a configuration problem, but in xdvi-1.8f I found (1) outdated INSTALL
  29. files (they *say* to disregard the contained configuration material), and (2) no
  30. texi doc (such as accompanied kpathsea, dvips, and (wow!) gcc).  (The man page was
  31. just that, i.e. had no install section.)

  33. Details:
  34. My test.tex  has a magstep1 cmbx font (so I am guaranteed somtehing viewable), and 
  35. then defines "\font\PTR=ptmr at 11 pt \PTR" to switch to Times-Roman.  
  36. Running xdvi -d 32 shows ...
  37. kdebug: fopen ...fonts/adobe/times/vf/ptmr.vf, r) => 0x417d60
  38. kdebug: fclose(0x417d60) => 0
  39. kdebug: fopen ...fonts/public/cm/pk/jetiiisi/cmbx10.360pk, r) => 0x417d60
  40. kdebug: fopen ...fonts/texfonts.map, r) => 0x417d70
  41. kdebug: fclose(0x417d70) => 0
  42. kpathsea: Running MakeTeXPK rptmr 396 300 1+96/300
  43. ...MakeTeXPK: Running gsftopk rptmr 396
  44. gsftopk version 1.8 .... ..successful
  45. kdebug: fopen ...gsftopk/rptmr.396pk, r) => 0x417d70.
  46. THEREFORE it is (1) finding the .vf, then (2) using the psfonts.map to locate
  47. the raw rptmr to gen a rptmr*pk (why?), and (3) not succeeding in displaying it.
  48. I tried defining "\font\PTR=rptmr at 11pt" with identical (zippo) results.
  49. I tried -d 4 ... hard to say, but it appears to read .vf correctly. Just stops.

  51. Bottom line: 
  52. I saw no doc to pick up: if there is one I would happily RTFM.
  53. Installing tengwar ... I believe I comprehend ... much ... correctly.
